At the swamp she claimed the snakes were so plentiful that they had to push them away with a stick and the air was so thick with mosquitos she became ill from all the bites. They finally finished and she hid out in the small garret that was about three feet in height, nine feet in length, and five feet in width. She spoke of the suffocating air, the dampness always about during the rains, and the smothering heat in the summer. She even talked about the rats and mice crawling over her body. She told about watching her two children Ellen and Benny grow up through a small peep hole. Her grandmother would bring her food at night and talk with her. Even as her great aunt was dying she could not leave to tend to her, all she could do was stay in her little smothering space. Soon Dr. Flint began saying that the children belonged to his daughter and the contract of their sale was not legal because she was too young to consent to sale them. So in fear that he would take Ellen, Mr. Sands said he would send her to stay with a cousin, in the North where she would go to school. Linda and her grandmother agreed and Ellen was sent to Boston. The night before Ellen left her mother came out of her hole and into the house to talk with her. She told Ellen, I am your mother. Ellen replied, Are you really my mother? Ellen couldnt even remember what her own mother looked like. She spent that night with her and they wept on each other and spoke of the things that had happened over the years. Ellen departed the following morning. Finally Linda received work that there was a safe way to get to the North and she left, after spending almost seven years in that tiny space. The commissioner received ten dollars for giving the certificate and five for denying it. The black man or woman accused of being a fugitive slave had no right to a trial and jury. Dr. Flints daughter was not long after married to a man by the name of Dodge and sent a letter to Linda to come home that they might welcome her with open arms. Soon after Dr. Flint died, and so did her dear grandmother who she wished to go to and help as much as shed helped her, but she could not. Linda began reading the papers everyday to see the new people checked into town and look for her mistress, Mrs. Dodge, whom shed heard had been very low of funds and needed Linda simply to get some money. Sure enough she showed up, Linda ran with the baby she nursed to California to stay with her brother. Benny was learning a trade with her brother and Ellen was in boarding school. At last her dear friend Mrs. Bruce bought her for three-hundred dollars. The Dodges were so certain theyd never find her and so low on finances that they probably would have sold her for anything. The secluded landscape of central Montana where it is set brings a sense of life into the environment of the film. During the course of the movie a recurring theme ties the mental, spiritual and emotional aspects of the characters to the physical setting of the plot. This theme is the Big Blackfoot River, which flows through the Macleans land, ands serves as a reference point for everything happening in the movie. During the movie the Maclean brothers go their separate ways, as does the branches of a river, but both the brothers and the rivers end up back in the same place, by one way or another. Norman Maclean writes this in the original text of the novel when he says, Eventually all things merge into one, and a river runs through it.The setting of a majority of the movie is the rugged terrain of Central Montana. A varied landscape, which changes from rolling hills to de ep crevasses, gouged by mountainous glaciers moving slowly over the terrain. The environment that the plot unfolds in is very important as it shapes the lives of the characters themselves. The Maclean brothers grew up with a river running through their land, and so the river directly influenced what the boys become. Their father to relates his own belief that theEarth was not created in six days, but in half a billion years, and on some of the rocks in the river lie raindrops from the dawn of time.The Big Blackfoot River also helps the characters develop deeper relationships with each other. The obvious example of this is the reverend taking his sons fishing and teaching them geology and moral lessons along the way. However a subtler example is the bonding of the two brothers. While fishing they build a mutual respect for each other, as well as admiration and value. Norman Maclean in particular notices how much his brothers fishing style differs from his father and in this sees his brothers own uniqueness and individuality. The river never stops being a part of Normans life. He continues to fish the deep holes of the Big Blackfoot, and later writes, I am haunted by waters.Another crucial piece of the setting is the rugged terrain outside of the river valley. When the movie first begins the viewer sees an overview of the Montana highlands, a landscape comprised of hills that are studded with great boulders left behind by glaciers. This represents the turmoil and hardships faced by the characters, and their struggle to overcome them, living in the rugged Montana countryside. The town the novel and movie are set in is also representative of the relative isolation the Maclean boys had to grow up in. In fact the entire towns isolation from a large majority of society has crafted a unique culture all its own, which also shapes the characters into what they are.Overall the film was well made, including both good rising and falling action, and a well-laid plot. There was a sufficient mix of action and drama, which kept the viewer interested in the lives of the characters as the story progressed. Redfords choice of actors I found unique, but also predictable. For example, the selecting of Brad Pitt to play Paul Maclean, who usually plays the roles of dynamic characters and does so in this film. If there was a fault in the movie itself it would be the development of Normans relationship with Jessie. This particular aspect of the film could have been better written. Other than that it was an excellent movie, tying moral values into a plot set in one of the most varying landscapes imaginable.

Lowering the drinking age essays Since the increase of the drinking age to 21 has taken effect in New York state, the argument for lowering that limit has been heated. The current age for the consumption of alcohol in the United States is 21 ("Consequences"). Just as it is stated in the following quote, age limits for minors are inconsistent. " Why is it that 18 year old U.S. citizens can legally obtain a driver's license, register to vote, be forced into jury duty or a draft, can be tried as an adult and even put to death, but cannot buy and consume alcoholic beverages?"("Drinking"). The following quote deals specifically with the problem of underage drinking. Logically, if parents could teach young adults the responsibilities of alcohol at a younger age, then this frightening statistic would probably be cut in half. As Jeff Roberts* put it in his interview, " I believe that one of the factors that drives young adults to drinking, if not the biggest reason, is that it is illegal. That is where the peer pressure and the glamour of it all comes in. Young adults see the older adults handling alcohol and say well I want to act older so I can do that too. Developing countries caught on to the progress. Learning about computers in school was made compulsory. To enhance the knowledge, everyone, young and old had to learn about computers and that was the first step. From computers to the Internet is but just a step ahead. The world is full of good and bad people, and having the Internet at your fingertips leaves something to your imagination of where the world is progressing today. The progress that the world has made is beyond imagination, thanks to the Internet. The Internet has its advantages and disadvantages too. Good Usage is Simply Correct Grammar What is good use? Does it even matter? Those are not easy questions to answer. Is good use just simply using correct grammar or is everyone who is using it just trying to speak above everyone else? What I mean by "trying to speak above others" is using large words, which you normally would not use, just to sound more intelligent than you actually are. I think the type of usage a person uses depends on the audience, the topic, and why the person is writing. Why does good usage have to involve more than just those items? My answer to that question is that it does not. There are, in fact, many different types of good usage. There is good usage for friendly letters, resumes, cover letters, applications and etc. For instance, I would not write a letter to a friend and use the same type of language I would use in a paper for a professor. The letter would be more casual while the paper would be much more formal. If I wrote the personal letter in a formal way the reader would take one look at the letter and think I was just trying to impress someone. However, that does not mean that I am not using good usage in that letter. I still use correct grammar, check the punctuation, and check the spelling. That is what I consider good usage to be. As long as I still do those items isnÃƒ t that okay for a friendly letter? My friend reading that letter does not want to have to look up every other word in the dictionary. Now let's say I was writing a resume cover letter. I would not write something like Ãƒ ¬Hey, IÃƒ d be a good asset to your companyÃƒ ®. Instead I would write something to the effect of Ãƒ ¬I feel I could be a desired asset in your companyÃƒ ®. I would choose the second statement because it sounds more... ...ing to say here? Basically, I am saying that good usage consists only of using correct grammar (paragraphs, punctuation, spelling, etc.) and has absolutely nothing to do with knowing all those "75 cent" words. People do not want to listen to other people trying to act smart and show off. Why does it matter? People need proper usage to get employed, receive good grades, to even get acknowledged in the "real world," and just simply to be accepted. Should good usage matter? This is tricky because it should not matter how proper people can speak as long as they do not sound "dumb as a rock" (if they are not) and they are able to perform their jobs well. Yet, we should not be running around saying sentences like "I ain't got no pen so I ain't gonna do my homework" because this is not even close to correct grammar which is my definition of what good usage really is.
